April 2004

WOW! I had no idea that my casual question about my reader's experience of "The Passion of the Christ" would generate so much response. Thanks to all who responded -- I learned from your comments and appreciate the dialogue.

As I mentioned to several readers who did respond, my personal experience was that I had an expectation that the film would move me in a positive way -- similar to my experience of "Schindler's List." It did not and, while I could see why so many people are raving about the film, I'd prefer to get my learning without witnessing that level of violence.

Clearly the film is an expression of Mel Gibson's deeply felt faith and sense of his personal purpose in life .... and, how's this for a segue: that's the subject of our feature article this month -- the power of purpose in our lives.

As always, I'll share a few favorite quotes and a recommendation or two. Thanks for subscribing and, please help me expand my readership by forwarding this message to friends, family and colleagues.

Be extraordinary!

The Power of Purpose

A lifetime of personally resisting instructions to “take a moment and do this exercise” makes me slightly nervous about this next request. Even so, I know of no more powerful exercise than to take a moment to ask yourself,

  • Why am I here?
  • What is my purpose for living?
  • What is my purpose for working?
  • What is my purpose in my family?
  • What is my purpose in my community?

Some people like to close their eyes and dream or pray for the answer. Others find that to sit down with a blank sheet of paper and “just start writing” works for them. Some people get their best results to these magic questions in conversation with a special friend or family member or by going for a walk in a favorite spot in nature.

Your purpose, vision and values drive your decisions, your goals and anything you want to accomplish. Your purpose specifically gives meaning to your actions and it is meaning that moves us to excellence.

One of my favorite quotes comes from British playwright George Bernard Shaw:

“This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a great one; the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.”

Sir George doesn’t mince words, does he? I love the imagery of “being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a great one; the being thoroughly worn out ...”

It is through discovering and living from a deep sense of purpose that miracles get created by average people. I was fortunate to discover my essential life purpose in 1972, and it changed my life forever.

Discovering your life purpose will change your life for the better.

We can each choose to be “a force of nature.”

Extraordinary Wisdom
Quotes of the Month

Our theme this month is “purpose” so here are two of my favorite quotes on that subject:

"What meat doth Caesar eat that he hath grown so great?"

Caesar was not great because of what he ate, he ate the same as everyone else. The difference lay within."

"When you are inspired by some great purpose, some extraordinary project, all your thoughts break their bounds... and you discover yourself to be a greater person by far than you ever dreamed yourself to be.”

Extraordinary Recommendation from Balance Point

I've just reviewed a brand new book on personal development. One of the testimonials that I read before purchasing the book sums up my view of it and I wanted to share it with you. It says:

"Before you even consider buying ANY personal development material, you must get this e-book. The attention to detail spread over 460 pages is staggering ... and the bonus items that come with it at no charge are better than most paid-for e-books you get on-line."

Without a doubt this is the definitive work on the self improvement industry. I guarantee that nowhere else will you find such comprehensive information about leading experts and their work.

'Self Improvement: The Top 101 Experts' is THE book if you're interested in making good choices about personal growth and I suggest you read it from cover to cover with notepad by your side.

This is my favorite e-book of the year. Go and find out about it for yourself now:

This is the only resource that I know that includes information from Tony Robbins, Dr. Phil, Zig Ziglar, Brian Tracy, Deepak Chopra, Wayne Dyer, Robert Allen, Dale Carnegie, Les Brown plus 92 more all in one book. It's definitely worth taking a look. Go to:

The book's only failing is that it does not include .... ME! I'm working on fixing that omission before they publish the second edition.

Wishing you an Extraordinary Life and Extraordinary Organizations,

Robert
